Church of Unity – a Memorial at Bezid Lake

Full description

On the site of the former village of Bezidu Nou, now submerged by a reservoir, stands the Church of Unity, dedicated to the diverse religious communities – Roman Catholic, Reformed, Unitarian, Greek Catholic, Sekler Sabbatarian – that once lived in harmony there. Consecrated in an ecumenical ceremony on August 3, 2024, the church serves as a living tribute to collective identity and reconciliation.

Its distinctive design features an open nave and a glass-topped tower, echoing the silhouette of the original church tower. Inside, visitors can explore an exhibition detailing the village’s history and cultural heritage. The project was realized thanks to contributions from over 500 donors, including diaspora members and local organizations.

Today, the Church of Togetherness is a significant pilgrimage and tourist destination – embodying remembrance, unity, and community resilience. Occasionally, its open structure may be partially submerged due to changes in lake water levels, serving as a poignant reminder of the past.
