European bee-eater - The round forest

Near the city of Reghin, in the area of the former clay pit of the city near the old relay, there is a colony of european bee-eater (Merops apiaster), one of the most beautiful migratory birds in the country. It has the size of a blackbird, a thin and bent beak and a brightly colored plumage. They make their nests in steep walls of clay, where they dig a galley with a length of 1.5-2 m. The european bee-eater is a bird protected by law.

Mociar Forest

The Mociar ancient oak reserve covers an area of approx. 45 ha, near the town of Reghin, between Solovăstru, Beica de Sus and Gurghiu, being one of the oldest forests in the country. Around 300 beech and oak trees have been identified here, aged between 650-720 years, 15-20 m high and 1.5-4 m in diameter, bearing fruit every 10-15 years. The forest was declared a natural forest reserve in 1932, and later, botanists Alexandru Borza and Ion Grințescu from Cluj drew attention to the special importance of the Mociar secular oaks in the 1940s after visiting the area. The forest is relatively rare, situated in a marshy area and with fauna typical of oak forests in the Transylvanian hilly areas (rabbit, deer, wild boar and species of day and night birds of prey).

Secular oak - Round forest

Known as the secular oak, the old tree stands on the plateau near the Round Forest, looking down on the town from the hill. In 2010, it was listed in the Tree of the Year competition and ranked 6th out of 87 trees nominated nationwide. Planted in 1849 in memory of the victory over Hungarian revolutionary troops, the tree is about 7 metres tall with a damaged bark and is a symbol of the passage of time and the will to survive. Not far from the lone oak, at the edge of Coșari forest, another attraction is the colony of bee eaters, a protected species of bird that can be seen both in flight and near nests dug into the nearby sandy bank.
