Mures County Museum - Natural Sciences Department presents a new temporary exhibition in the main building. The LAST DINOZAURI FROM TRANSILVANIA exhibition is scheduled for a period of about 7 months, for the first time in Târgu Mureș. The opening of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 18.00, at the headquarters of the Natural Sciences Section, 24 Horea Street.

The Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, STAR Institute, Laboratory of Palaeoteriology and Geology of the Cuaternary and the Natural Sciences Department of the Mures County Museum are opening a temporary exhibition entitled “The Last Dinosaurs of Transylvania”. The exhibition features four life-size reconstructions of reptiles that lived in Transylvania at the end of the Cretaceous period. The 6 m long and 2.3 m high Magyarosaurus dacus sauropoda, Struthiosaurus transylvanicus ankylosaurus, the carnivorous Elopteryx nopcsai and a flying reptile Ornithocheirus sp. are on display. During the Mesozoic Era, this region covered the area that is now Transylvania. Among its inhabitants were the 'dwarf' dinosaurs first described by Baron Ferenc Nopcsa at the end of the 19th century. The shown fauna inhabited this (probably) insular area about 70 million years ago. Today, this area corresponds to the Hațeg depression (in geological terms, the Hațeg Basin) or Hațeg County, as well as other areas of Transylvania.

The exhibition also includes skeletal remains of Zalmoxes shqiperorum, Struthiosaurus, Telmatosaurus, various sauropods and remains of reptiles and mammals that lived at the same time as the dinosaurs. Dinosaur eggs are also on display.

The exhibition also presents some of the palaeontological researches carried out in the laboratory of the University of Cluj-Napoca, which have uncovered new sites of vertebrate fauna from the Upper Cretaceous, both in the Hateg Basin and in the Poiana Rusca Mountains, and in the Transylvanian Basin, in the counties of Alba, Salaj and Cluj.
