Restlessness from Ivan Vîrîpaev (r. Theodor-Cristian Popescu)/ RO

Mar-29

After the play 'Villa Dolorosa' by Rebekka Kricheldorf, staged at Sala Mare in 2020, was nominated for the UNITER Award for Best Play, renowned director Theodor-Cristian Popescu returns to the National Theatre Târgu Mureș – 'Liviu Rebreanu' Company with a new production, this time scheduled for Sala Mică. The play 'Restlessness' by Ivan Vîrîpaev will benefit from the always fresh and unconventional vision that Theodor-Cristian Popescu has accustomed his audience to.
A complex playwright involved in the social and psychological depths of contemporary man, Ivan Vîrîpaev proposes a very current story, where we will find echoes of recent news, as well as those of more distant historical events, which the passage of time has only sharpened.
Young Polish journalist Krzysztof Zieliński manages to get an interview with the famous American writer Ula Richter, who was born in Poland. Famous not only for her literature but also for her sharp, reserved, and uncomfortable character, Ula Richter rarely grants interviews, turning them into real events. At a time when her career is marked by controversies and declines, a display of honesty could rehabilitate her in the eyes of readers and a world that is increasingly polarized and resistant to nuances, willing to annihilate before investigating.
Krzysztof Zieliński, though tense, has a premonition that the interview will be special, but the direction it will take will exceed his wildest expectations.
Skillfully oscillating between fantasy and reality until the two overlap, Vîrîpaev's play manages to mesmerize the audience as Ula Richter manipulates the interviewer. Sudden changes of roles and plans bring into question the truth we commonly call reality and challenge the reality whose outlines we perceive to be often clear, while they sketch illusions that they endlessly substitute.
The text is exciting and provocative, poetic and disconcerting, but beyond the unsettling nature evoked by the title, we find prefigured hope that, at some point, everything will make sense, and contradictions will disappear like our very lives.
