"We often imagine how the story might continue after reading the last sentence: "...and they lived happily ever after." You mean nothing ever happened to the characters? They had such a happy life that nothing more can be told about it? You mean dull? For a character, the absence of any adventure, of any conflict, only means that they no longer exist. We tried to awaken Dănilă Prepeleac from the abyss of boredom that he fell into after Ion Creangă left him happily ever after. For it seems hard to believe that the devil he had tricked simply resigned himself to his fate and went about his own business. Of course, the devil's revenge could have come in many ingenious forms. But we live in a society where the law must take precedence and the devil is willing to resort to it. And the most natural formula is to sue the one who has deceived and wronged you. So happy Danila finds himself in the middle of a lawsuit. Man versus devil. Judges, witnesses, prosecution, defense. Where's the truth? Who's guilty? Is justice able and willing to see it through? So many questions.
Curious business.
Whatever the solution, someone will be dissatisfied, many will be outraged. We are accustomed today, perhaps more than ever before, to all setting ourselves up as judges of everything that happens around us.To point the finger, to interpret in the strangest and most unexpected ways the words of others, to put them against the wall and even to demand that they be forbidden to say anything.
Or to write.
Do we still need life to be told in stories?Do we still allow life to be told in stories?
I think we do.
Because if it weren't, it wouldn't be told."
