Puzzle pieces for the reconstruction of Béla Czóbel's oeuvre
Béla Czóbel was one of the best known and most respected artists of 20th century Hungarian painting, but his oeuvre has not yet been thoroughly studied. Although numerous monographs and other publications have dealt with the œuvre of the long-lived painter, no real catalogue raisonné and no major monograph has yet been written. Research and in-depth study are hampered mainly by the extremely large number of lost works and the lack of archival documents, i.e. other sources, for certain periods.
During the lecture, art historian Gergely Barki will talk about the new research results of the last 20 years, the sometimes thriller-like stories of the discovery of works of art that have been found by chance, and the importance of the still latent, lost works.
The lecturer will focus in particular on the painter's early period up to 1925, when he was a factor in the international scene as a pioneer of modern painterly endeavours in various centres of Europe.
The art history lecture will be given in Hungarian.
