The Yellow Rose is a novel set on the Hungarian plain written in 1892 by Jókai Mór, in which the author describes the natural world and customs of the Hortobágy region with almost ethnographic precision. This dance production, created by choreographer-director Könczei Árpád with the Maros Művészegyüttes, brings to life the dramatic story of this novel inspired by rural peasant life.
The love triangle between two childhood friends, Decsi Sándor and Lacza Ferkó, and Sándor’s beloved Klári is well known in literary terms. What makes this adaptation unique is the way the temperament and value system of the Hortobágy begin to shape and drive the conflict. Jókai endows his characters with almost elemental qualities: Sándor is passionate and determined like the horses; Ferkó is cautious and disciplined like the bull; Klári is rare and singular, like the yellow rose.
The atmosphere of the performance is defined by the silences of shepherd solitude, the inner tensions raging within the shepherd-man, the weighty words born of silence, and the character-shaping relationship between human beings and the surrounding natural world. These symbolic topoi, reminiscent of Greek drama, inspired the creators of the performance. Thus, The Yellow Rose unfolds as a surge of ancient stories, meanings, and forces. And what better vehicle for this emotional tide than the folk songs, folk dances, and traditional costumes of the Hortobágy? Before our eyes, the threads of a love tragedy unravel and ultimately resolve according to their own order—just as in life itself.
