The Yellow Rose is a pastoral novel written by Mór Jókai in 1892, in which he describes, almost with the precision of an ethnologist, the natural world and customs of the Hortobágy. In this dance performance, choreographer-director Árpád Könczei, together with the Maros Artistic Ensemble, brings to life the dramatic story of this novel inspired by peasant traditions.
The love triangle between two childhood friends, Decsi Sándor and Lacza Ferkó, and Sándor’s beloved, Klári, is well known in literature. What makes it special here is the way the temperament and values of the Hortobágy start to shape the conflict. Jókai gives his characters almost elemental qualities: Sándor is passionate and determined, like the horses; Ferkó is cautious and disciplined, like the bull; Klári is rare and mysterious, like the yellow rose.
The mood of the performance is defined by the solitude of shepherding, the tensions raging within the shepherd-man, the weight of words emerging from silence, and the character-shaping relationship between humans and the surrounding nature. It was precisely these symbolic elements, reminiscent of Greek tragedies, that inspired the creators. Thus, The Yellow Rose performance flows with these ancient stories, meanings, and forces. And what better vessel for this flow than the folk songs, dances, and costumes of the Hortobágy? Before our eyes, the threads of a love tragedy unfold and find their resolution – just as in life itself.
