Yellow Rose (HU)

Feb-18

The Yellow Rose is Mór Jókai's 1892 novel of the Puszta, in which he details the natural and customary world of the Hortobágy with the fastidiousness of an ethnologist. In this dance performance, choreographer and director Árpád Könczei has worked with the Mures Artists' Association to present the dramatic story of this novel inspired by the peasant world.
The love triangle between the two childhood friends Sándor Decsi and Ferkó Lacza, and Sándor's lover Klári, is a well-known literary story. But it becomes special as the Hortobágy's temperament and values begin to drive the conflict. Jókai gives the characters in the novel almost natural qualities: Sándor is passionate and determined, like a horse; Ferkó is cautious and disciplined, like a bull; Klári is rare and strange, like a yellow rose.
The underlying mood of the performance is defined by the silences of the solitude of shepherding, the tensions that rage within the shepherd-man, the words that are weightily articulated out of silence, the character-forming relationship between man and the nature around him. It is precisely these symbolic topos, reminiscent of Greek drama, that inspired the creators of this production. Thus, The Yellow Rose is a ripple of these ancient stories, meanings and forces. And what could be a better vehicle for this ripple than the folk songs, dances and costumes of the Hortobágy? The threads of a love tragedy unravel before our eyes, and everything unravels in its own way - as we know it in life.
