Written in 1893, the play was censored for eight years, and when finally premiered in London in 1902, the audience was downright outraged by the controversial content at the time. The story revolves around the relationship between Mrs. Kitty Warren, the madam of a brothel, and her daughter, Vivie. With his acidic humor and clever intuition, Shaw puts mother and daughter in a position to confront and expose the hypocrisy and decadence of the so-called high society. Will their relationship withstand a struggle over sex, love, money, career, and morality?
Mrs. Warren and her business partner, Sir George Crafts (Claudiu Istodor), manage various brothels in major cities across Europe. Mrs. Warren's daughter, educated at Cambridge, disagrees with her mother's profession, and the two have vastly different views on life. What follows is not hard to imagine... each believes their lifestyle is correct and tries to impose their viewpoints.

One of Shaw's three "unpleasant plays" had its premiere in 1902 at a London theater club, where it was performed only twice and was banned for 32 years.
The cast that performed the play in 1905 in New York was arrested overnight, and the producer was tried and convicted.
The play received permission to be performed by a professional theater a year after its author won the Nobel Prize.
You may wonder why this play was banned for so long? Because Shaw exposes the immorality of English society covered by false appearances, Philistinism, and hypocrisy.
Bernard Shaw boldly tackles the theme of one of the world's oldest professions: prostitution. For who is Mrs. Warren, who lives in mystery, if not a former prostitute turned brothel madam?
Nothing else but a character trying to hide both her past and present, fearing that her daughter, raised away from this world, will discover the truth.
