Uncle Vania (RO)

Oct-29

National Theatre, Targu Mures
The fascinating and inexhaustible universe of Chekhov is brought to the stage of the "Liviu Rebreanu" Company by director Sorin Militaru in a production that remains faithful to the text yet accessible to contemporary audiences.
"Uncle Vanya" is one of the plays considered a cornerstone of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's work.
Originally published in 1898 and staged for the first time ten years later at the Moscow Art Theatre, the Russian playwright's text tells the story of Professor Aleksandr Vladimirovich Serebriakov and his family.
The professor, now in his second marriage, brings his much younger wife, Elena Andreevna, to the estate he owns. Living there are Ivan Petrovich Voinitsky, Uncle Vanya, the brother of the professor's first wife who manages the estate, Sonia Aleksandrovna Serebriakov, the professor’s daughter from his first marriage, and Maria Vasilevna Voinitsky, the professor’s first wife’s mother.
Among the other characters in the text is Mihail Lvovich Astrov, the local doctor and a regular guest at the estate.
At the Serebriakov estate, apparently, nothing happens—something typical of Chekhov's world—but at the same time, enormous things are happening in the minds and hearts of the characters. Sonia is passionately in love with Astrov but does not consider herself worthy of him. Astrov and Vanya are both in love with the charming Elena. Each person lives in their own world, trapped in boredom and a lack of self-confidence.
All hidden thoughts eventually come to the surface, though without drastically changing the rigid rules of such a universe.
