Treasure Mysteries - temporary exhibition

May-15
The Mureș County Museum – Department of Archaeology is pleased to announce the official opening of the temporary exhibition “Treasure Mysteries”, which will take place on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM, at the Department of Archaeology, located in the Citadel.
The exhibition will be open to the public for an extended period, until March 2026.
What transforms an archaeological object into a treasure?
Is it its material value, the context of its discovery, or perhaps the often-lost story it carries?
The “Treasure Mysteries” exhibition invites visitors on a unique journey through these questions, showcasing a selection of valuable and enigmatic archaeological finds discovered using metal detectors in Mureș County.
The public will have the opportunity to admire rare artifacts—some exhibited for the first time—grouped thematically around the idea of "treasure": precious metal objects, coin hoards, bronze deposits, and fragments of history that raise more questions than answers.
Each item on display encourages visitors not just to observe, but to investigate—to become, in turn, explorers, archaeologists, and interpreters of the past.
The exhibition does not aim to offer definitive answers but rather to open new perspectives: what does “value” mean in archaeology? Where does fascination begin, and where does scientific certainty end?
The exhibition is curated by Dr. Botond Rezi, archaeologist at the Department of Archaeology of the Mureș County Museum. The concept was developed in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team composed of Dr. Sándor Berecki, Dr. Coralia Dorina Bonta, Dr. Daniel Cioată, Dr. László Keve, Dr. Nicoleta Man, and Dr. Rita E. Németh. Together, they have created a coherent and engaging exhibition route designed to spark the curiosity of visitors of all ages.
Some hoards are enigmatic due to unclear discovery circumstances, while others are true treasures because of the objects they contain.
Admission to the opening is free, and the exhibition can be visited afterward during the museum's regular opening hours.
