Barnabás Kelemen and the Tonkünstler Orchestra

Nov-03

The renowned Tonkünstler Orchestra of Vienna arrives in Târgu Mureș with violinist Barnabás Kelemen as part of its international tour!
One of Vienna’s leading symphony orchestras, conducted by clarinettist and conductor Andreas Ottensamer, brings a selection of outstanding works by Kodály, Bartók and Schubert to audiences in Târgu Mureș. The programme features the Dances of Galánta, Bartók’s Violin Concerto and Schubert’s monumental Symphony in C major. The tour’s soloist is acclaimed violinist Barnabás Kelemen.
According to his own recollections, Kodály spent the happiest years of his childhood in Galánta. Inspired by the music of the Roma musicians in the area, the composer later incorporated melodies from a collection of dances from Galánta, published in Vienna, into his 1933 orchestral work.
Continuing this folkloric inspiration, the programme includes Bartók’s Rhapsody No. 2 for Violin and Orchestra, which draws on Romanian, Ruthenian and Hungarian melodies, followed by his Violin Concerto No. 1, a work that remained unknown to the public for many years. Although composed in his youth, the concerto was only published after the death of violinist Stefi Geyer in 1956. She was Bartók’s first love and the person to whom he dedicated the work. Unlike the traditional concerto form, this composition consists of just two movements, featuring strongly contrasting moods.
The concert concludes with Schubert’s Great Symphony in C major, discovered by Robert Schumann. Even in this symphonic work, Schubert treats the instruments almost like human voices, creating a unique and fascinating sound world.
These masterpieces will be performed by the Tonkünstler Orchestra, one of Austria’s leading symphony orchestras, alongside renowned violinist Barnabás Kelemen.
