Szép Palkó (Handsome Palkó) - in hungarian
– fairy tale performance –
This well-known tale, cherished by children and adults across Transylvania, can be found in the storybook collections of Elek Benedek, who first published it in 1901.
It’s a classic and beloved folktale, also featured in various Transylvanian folklore compilations.
The story follows the journey of Palkó, a poor young man seeking his fortune in the world. Along the way, he encounters giants and, despite his humble upbringing, speaks to them with respect. Because of this, he gains the trust of an old giant who takes him to the royal palace.
At the king’s court, Palkó becomes an inner servant due to his respectful manners and soon catches the attention of the king’s daughters—especially the youngest. The two fall in love, but the king, noticing their bond, devises a series of difficult trials for Palkó, convinced he will fail.
With the help of the princess, Palkó contacts devils who carry out the king’s commands in his name. However, in the third trial, he must confront the royal family itself.
The princess’s cleverness and Palkó’s resourcefulness complement each other, and together they outsmart the old king and queen.
Still, due to the queen’s curse, they forget each other. The curse is only lifted once the king and queen die. After that, the lovers are reunited and take over the kingdom, celebrating with a grand wedding.
As in most fairy tales, good triumphs in the end.
Presented by the Maros Artistic Ensemble, the story is told through dance, while the main characters also speak in prose. The performance follows the story’s narrative, with all characters appearing in smaller or larger scenes.
The music perfectly complements the storyline and choreography, uniting the elements into a cohesive performance. The instrumental music is performed by the ensemble’s orchestra, while the folk songs are sung by the cast.
The vibrant costumes and scenic design enhance the audience’s visual experience.
Director–Choreographer: János Varga
Music: László Kelemen
