About the Movie:
The film about the savior of mothers shows the period of Semmelweis' life in which, at the age of 28, as a young Hungarian doctor in a Vienna hospital, he discovers what causes the deadly puerperal fever and how it can be prevented.
In a spectacular and twisty film, Lajos Koltai commemorates the excellence of medical history, who became the savior of mothers with his recognition and actions half a century before the discovery of pathogens...
He saw the invisible.
He accomplished the impossible.
Semmelweis (H. Miklós Vecsei).
Today we remember him as a legend: as a brave and indomitable man, full of both the desire for knowledge and the desire for justice. It is not by chance that they are referred to as such: the savior of mothers.
In his own age, however, he saw it quite differently.
The other Hungarian doctors he worked with at the maternity clinic in Vienna thought he was crazy: he was not interested in the pleasures of the imperial city, he only lived for his work.
The Austrian doctors considered him unbearably violent: he had only one goal in front of his eyes, the health of the mothers entrusted to him; and for the sake of the holy cause he crossed all obstacles, broke all rules.
And for her boss, the head of the clinic (László Gálffi), she was the living, unpleasant conscience: because if Doctor Semmelweis's theory is true and obstetricians are spreading the disease from which so many women in childbirth have died, then they are all murderers...
And a midwife (Katica Nagy) worked alongside him, who saw in him what no one else did: a man who longed for love and comfort.
The legendary director-cinematographer Lajos Koltai, nominated for an Oscar, made a worthy successor to the great classic films with the best domestic actors, a captivating, spectacular and emotionally rich chronicle of the story of a special person. (National Film Institute)
