Lucy Thurber’s play talks about the universal problem of a humble family’s struggle with shortcomings, typical family issues, desires of evolution, of escaping and accepting the unfolding events: a violent alcoholic father who has some moments of repentance, a mother who holds in her hands the other characters’ destinies (even of those who are not part of her family), a teenage gifted son who wants to move forward, a gifted daughter, but too young to escape from the small town where they live, an uncle (policeman) who is lusting after his cousin (the mother), the policeman’s wife who is trying to save her marriage and her public image and a young female teacher who wants to help the son to evolve.
