SANTA LOLITA
A story of becoming human

“The burden of sexuality is heavy; yes. And, in general, the task imposed upon us is difficult; but almost every serious task is difficult, and every task is serious. If one recognizes this, and—regarding their own nature and life, their own experience and childhood, and from their own strength—is able to form a completely individual relationship (free from the influences of tradition and morality) with sexuality, then they no longer need to fear losing their head and becoming unworthy of their greatest treasure.” /Rainer Maria Rilke/

The stage adaptation of the 2000 Mexican-Spanish co-production film Sexo por Compasión, created by Barcelona-born actress, screenwriter, and director Laura Mañá, offers a glimpse into the ordeal of Dolores, a saintly resident of a deserted Latin American town, whose husband leaves her precisely because she is “too good.” Amidst the barrenness and unbearable nature of the provincial town, Dolores seeks refuge in divine faith—and, in her own unique way, she finds it. This woman, who raises the principle “nothing human is alien to me” as her banner, and who adopts the name Lolita as a kind of artistic pseudonym, discovers the meaning of her life in helping everyone—despite her own misery and loneliness—without sparing her own body or senses. The story that unfolds before our eyes is essentially that of a saint: yet her path leads not toward deification, but toward humanization.
