PENELOPEIA
Director: Zoltán Balázs
Penelopeia is Margaret Atwood's unique myth adaptation of Homer's epic Odyssey, the Trojan War, and the embodiment of female loyalty, Queen Penelope of Ithaca. It is a modern echo and reflection of Penelope's story, translated into a dramatic structure. The stage adaptation of the highly successful novel written in 2005 extends the tragic fate of Penelope, who is tormented in Hades’ captivity, and projects the pain and guilt felt over the cruel murder of the Handmaids. Zoltán Balázs' direction retells the well-known ancient story from the personal perspective of Odysseus's experienced, brave, and resourceful wife, amplifying the female aspects of the myth.
The performance presented by the Maladype Theatre in a Hungarian-Macedonian-Polish coproduction offers a diverse multi-art production that provides the audience with a kaleidoscopic play experience that can be felt in personal and collective recognitions.
