ORATIO, STUDIO ET COLLECTIO - exhibition

Apr-29

29 january 2024 - 31 august 2024
The Mureș County Museum - History Section, the Haáz Rezső Museum and the Transylvanian Reformed Museum present a new temporary exhibition in the museum building of the Târgu Mureș Citadel. The opening of the exhibition "ORATIO, STUDIO ET COLLECTIO. 400 years of existence of the reformed colleges in Transylvania" will take place on Monday, January 29, 2024, starting at 5:00 p.m., at the headquarters of the History Section in the Târgu Mureș Citadel.
The highest level of reformed education in Transylvania was represented by the colleges founded successively during the 17th-19th centuries. The first steps towards the establishment of higher education were taken by Prince Gabriel Bethlen, who brought before the Diet of 1622 the question of establishing a college. This approach was followed by the opening of the first reformed college in Transylvania, in Alba Iulia. The temporary exhibition "ORATIO, STUDIO ET COLLECTIO. 400 years of existence of the reformed colleges in Transylvania" aims to summarize 4 centuries of changes and processes in the history of the colleges, with a special focus on the Transylvanian collecting culture.
Reformed colleges became centers not only of education, but also of scientific life. The wide range of objects that served the activities carried out within the schools make these collections from the 19th century the most varied museum funds in Transylvania. Although they can be considered the first public collections, their fund was dispersed after nationalization in 1948. On the one hand, they represented the basis of the newly established regional museums and libraries, while some objects continue to enrich the disused collections of various successor schools , and others remain unidentified.
The middle of the 19th century marks a turning point in Transylvanian collecting. This task had been performed exclusively by schools, but the museums established after the fall of the communist regime took over the obligation to collect and preserve objects of historical value. Since then, the school collections have focused exclusively on the acquisition of auxiliary teaching materials. This is why we have set the middle of the 19th century as the upper chronological limit of the exhibition.
The exhibition presents the structure, life and collections of the reformed colleges in Alba Iulia, Aiud, Târgu Mureș, Cluj-Napoca, Odorheiu Secuiesc, Orăștie. The temporary exhibition ORATIO, STUDIO ET COLLECTIO can be visited until August 31, 2024, in the Citadel Museum building, from Tuesday to Friday, between 09.00 and 17.00, Saturday and Sunday, between 10.00 and 14.00. Monday is closed. Entrance ticket price: 15 lei - adults, 7 lei - pensioners and 3 lei - students and students.
