The liar from Carlo Goldoni

The Venetian summer nights are stifling, where young lovers long for each other beyond words. Yet, without their fathers’ approval, marriage is out of the question. Civil morality hovers like a guardian over the passion that ignites in secrecy. “Surely, no harm comes from a few lies or a bit of opportunism.” This is the mindset of the charming Lelio, a master of improvisation, especially when it comes to winning women’s hearts. However, over time, his ingenious turns of phrase, numerous noble titles, and spectacular but fabricated past exploits begin to intertwine irreversibly. Even if the emotions behind his intentions are genuine, the grand cathedral of lies soon becomes so overwhelming that nothing can prevent its inevitable collapse.
