Professor Stephanus (Klaus Maria Brandauer) is unexpectedly retired. The doctor is not ready to part from his vocation yet, so he bids farewell to his hospital colleagues, moves back to his hometown, and — to the delight of the locals — begins working as a general practitioner. Reuniting with his youthful love and childhood best friend deeply affects the doctor, who has been uprooted from his safe environment. However, life in the village is not only filled with positive experiences: he also becomes entangled in petty but harmful political disputes that prevent him from indulging in nostalgia or experimenting with the idea of a new life. Stephanus must learn the hard way that he can only come to terms with the ghosts of his past by confronting the present.
