The Candles of Truth (HU)

At the beginning of the 1940s, Bezidu Nou was apparently an island of peace, where different religions, denominations and world views could coexist in exemplary peace. Among others, there is a small Szekler community who have followed Jewish customs since the Middle Ages. They are the Sabbatarians. Most of them converted to the Israelite religion in the second half of the nineteenth century, and by the time our story begins, they are Szeklers with a Jewish identity. They live undisturbed with the other inhabitants of the village, but when Northern Transylvania is annexed to Hungary, the politics of Budapest suddenly intrude into their lives. From then on, origin and religious identity become a matter of life and death.
Csaba Székely's The Candles of Truth is a memorial to the trials and tribulations of the people of Bözödújfal. The author addresses this particularly poignant subject with deep empathy and a unique sense of humour. We are given a glimpse into the lives of a community who have always got on well with each other, except during the four years of history when the authorities forcibly interfered in their lives. The work tells the story of these four years. The production, which is also the premiere of the drama, is directed by Aba Sebestyén, with music by Tibor Cári.
