Ferenc Molnár’s name is synonymous with lively farces written with perfect mastery of stagecraft. The Doctor (A doktor úr) is the author’s first stage play from his youth, yet it already displays his unmatched dramatic technique, dynamic structure, and ironically exaggerated comic characters. Dr. Sárkány, a well-known and successful lawyer, and Puzsér, the likable burglar, represent two extremes of society, yet they live almost in symbiosis: the lawyer constantly gets his protégé out of trouble, while his own reputation largely rests on the brilliant legal maneuvers he performs in Puzsér’s defense. When they swap roles for a single day, their world turns upside down.

 

The Doctor is not appearing for the first time in the repertoire of the Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureș) theatre. Seventy-five years ago, Molnár’s comedy was the very first prose premiere of the newly founded Székely Theatre. Now, as the closing event of its festive 75th anniversary, the company pays tribute both to the play and to the founding of the theatre with this reimagined production.
