Aurora Borealis – Northern Light is a family drama rich in twists and turns, unfolding on two timelines, exploring the depths of the relationship between mother and daughter. Olga (Tóth Ildikó), a successful lawyer living in Vienna, faces a dramatic turn of events when her elderly mother, Mária (Törőcsik Mari), suddenly falls into a coma. As Mária hovers between life and death, Olga uncovers a deeply buried secret. Her increasingly passionate search leads her back to post-war Europe of the 1950s, where at the end of the journey she finds herself face to face with someone she had never known before: herself. The film speaks, with feminine sensitivity and through unusual situations, about the dramatic consequences of identity crisis, the never-healing wounds caused by the wars of a fragmented Europe, mortality, and the liberating power of exposing lies and long-held silences.

Aurora Borealis – Northern Light is the 26th feature by internationally acclaimed, Kossuth Prize- and Béla Balázs Prize-winning, Cannes Grand Prix and Golden Bear-winning writer-director Mészáros Márta.

In gripping and at times almost investigative, crime-like fashion, the film addresses the dramatic situations stemming from identity crisis, shame, the wounds caused by secrets, and the liberating force of revealing the truth. “Wherever foreign soldiers – as allies or as conquerors – establish relations with the population of a country, children are born out of wedlock,” says Dr. Barbara Stelzl-Marx, a recognized researcher of the topic and Vice President of the Austrian UN Committee. “Hungary went through similar traumas during the Soviet occupation, yet the search for Hungarian ‘war children’ has only just begun. We must acknowledge that the war is still not over,” stated director Mészáros Márta.
