The genre classification of this now-classic musical play is precise, as the story is accompanied by fairy-tale elements, miracles, time travel, ghosts, and endearing games. In this tale, our present-day heroes try to find each other—and thus happiness—amidst intrigue, jealousy, pettiness, accusations, criminals, police officers, and janitors.

“The Attic” is a unique, timeless tale that speaks to both children and adults—anyone who believes in miracles, second chances, and the power of love. The story takes place in a mysterious yet familiar attic, where four gentle ghosts—Prince, Kid, Lantern, and Pushy—have been waiting for a century to finally move on to the realm of eternity. Unexpectedly, they gain allies in the young Radio Man, who is working on a secret invention, and Shrew, the girl who is secretly in love with him. And then there is Mamóka—the heart and soul of the attic—who, with her wisdom, warmth, and understanding, offers the kind of emotional support that only someone who has seen much of life can give. She is not just a witness to events but a quiet guide and spiritual mentor: Mamóka’s presence is a steady anchor in this floating world that lies between reality and imagination.

Their attic is not just a space filled with clutter, but a gateway between past and future, between reality and fantasy—and it is Mamóka who helps open these gateways in the hearts of others.

All of this is brought to life through Péter Horváth’s witty libretto and the songs of Gábor Presser and Dusán Sztevanovity, which have become hits almost without exception. The young characters, confronted with transcendence, the spirit world, and the relativity of time and space—and simultaneously struggling with the trivialities of real life—are capable of a higher quality of existence. They are able to discover the infinite within themselves and each other, and rise above the bleakness of everyday life.

This play is as philosophical as most classic fairy tales: it places fundamental questions of existence and the life-or-death struggles of youth building their own lives into a simple, enjoyable, and even entertaining framework.

Filled with humor, lyricism, and deep human emotions, the story highlights that memory, love, and hope are eternal values—and that sometimes, in the most unexpected places—like a dusty attic or in the words of a wise Mamóka—we may find a place to call home.

The event was made possible with the support of the Mureș County Council and the Târgu Mureș City Hall.
