World Art Nouveau Day is celebrated annually on June 10, as both Ödön Lechner (1845–1914) and Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926), two emblematic figures of Art Nouveau architecture, passed away on this date.
Lechner is considered the founder of Hungarian national architecture, blending folk motifs with a modern formal language, while Gaudí, representative of Catalan Modernism, became world-famous for his organic, nature-inspired spatial forms.
The date is symbolic, as it brings together two creators from different cultural contexts, with individual architectural visions but united by a common goal: renewing architecture in an artistic, original, and human-centered way.
World Art Nouveau Day was initiated by several European cities to draw attention to the value of the Art Nouveau heritage, the need for its conservation, and the possibilities for its contemporary reinterpretation.
