Angel Makers – The Story of the Tiszazug Poisoning Women
– a documentary folk-dance theatre performance commemorating the murders that took place in the 1920s–1930s in Nagyrév and the surrounding villages –

A co-production of Bekecs Folk Dance Theatre and Széllyes Sándor Barn Theatre

This folk-dance theatre performance transports the audience to the Tiszazug region of the early 20th century, to an apparently peaceful rural community on the Hungarian Plain, where dark secrets lie beneath the surface. The story portrays a world marked by poverty, the oppression of women, and strict social constraints, where marriage is not about love but survival. An elderly midwife, Aunt Zsuzsa, offers “solutions” to the women. Their unspoken alliance leads to the gradual disappearance of abusive husbands.

Told through the language of folk dance, the narrative begins by capturing the beauty of rural Alföld life, but the movements become increasingly unsettling and darker as guilt and fear creep into the women’s world.

The unity of the community collapses when a doctor uncovers the murders. The women turn against each other, and the secret comes to light.

“Angel Makers” is a powerful, true story that explores women’s destinies, the cost of survival, and the complex moral questions surrounding collective guilt.
