The Angel Makers

This folk dance theatre performance transports the audience to the early 20th century, to the Tiszazug region — an apparently peaceful corner of the Great Hungarian Plain, where dark secrets lie beneath the surface. The story portrays a world of poverty, female oppression, and social constraints, where marriage is not about love, but survival. An elderly midwife, Aunt Zsuzsa, offers a “solution” to the women. Their silent alliance begins to make their abusive husbands disappear one by one.
Told through the language of folk dance, the story initially evokes the beauty of rural life on the plains, but the movements gradually grow uneasy and darker as guilt and fear creep into the women’s world.
The unity of the community collapses when a doctor uncovers the murders. The women turn against one another, and the dark secret is finally revealed.
“The Angel Makers” is a powerful performance based on a true story, focusing on women’s destinies, the price of survival, and the moral weight of collective guilt.
