– a documentary folk dance theatre performance in memory of the murders committed in Nagyrév and nearby villages during the 1920s–1930s –
A co-production of Bekecs Dance Theatre and the Szélyes Sándor Barn Theatre
This folk dance theatre performance transports the audience to early 20th-century Tiszazug, a seemingly peaceful Hungarian lowland village, where dark secrets lurk beneath the surface. The story explores themes of poverty, the oppression of women, and social pressures in a world where marriage is more about survival than love. An elderly midwife, Aunt Zsuzsa, offers the women a “solution.” The silent alliance between them leads to the successive disappearance of oppressive husbands.
Through the expressive language of folk dance, the performance begins by evoking the beauty of rural life, but movements grow darker and more unsettling as guilt and fear seep into the women’s world.
The unity of the community begins to fracture when a doctor uncovers the crimes. The women turn on each other, and the truth comes to light.
“The Angel Makers” is a powerful performance based on true events, centering on women’s fate, the cost of survival, and the question of collective guilt.
