HOUSE BETWEEN THE BLOCKS
A dramedy
Translated by: László Sándor
A house filled with landscapes and still lifes. A house with large windows through which the relics of communism—the blocks—can be seen. A house where melancholy lives alongside dreamlike visions that feel real. A house awaiting demolition...
The story unfolds between the winter of 1983 and the spring of 1984, in the Both family home in a small Transylvanian town. The Both sisters, Etelka and Ida, are amateur painters who create their works based on early 20th-century postcards. Through the narration of Misi, a foster child who spends his free time in the Both house, we witness fragments from the lives of the sisters and their mother.
Radu Afrim, a defining director of the past eleven years at the Tompa Miklós Company of the National Theatre of Târgu Mureș—almost a resident director—returns with a world premiere. Known for critically acclaimed and locally beloved productions such as Quietness, Retrobird Crashes into a Block and Falls onto Hot Asphalt, Grand Hotel Retrobird, The Devil’s Rehearsal, Drunks, and The Meaning of Emma’s Life, Afrim has written the script for House Between the Blocks specifically for the company.
